Education West Africa helps school pupils in Sierra Leone get a better start in life.

Through education, young people can strive to escape poverty and get a job, earn money, live a healthier life, become independent and contribute to their family and the economy of their country.

We ask children, teachers and headteachers what their greatest needs are, and set up projects to fulfil those needs.

Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a life expectancy of 54 (World Bank data). Education is key to changing this for future generations.

  • Pulborough pancake event raises £1,193

    The Great Pulborough Pancake Day took place on Shrove Tuesday, 17th February, and was extremely popular.  As well as freshly cooked pancakes, there was a huge tombola and a display about the work of Education West Africa. The money raised was shared between EWA and two other charities, and we were delighted to receive a fantastic donation of £1,193, which will be used to help children and their schools in Sierra Leone.   • New roof at primary school in Kenema

    EWA has funded a new roof for a block of classrooms at a primary school in Kenema. The roof leaked during the rainy season, so that the children's learning was badly disrupted. A detailed estimate for the work was sent to EWA, so the Trustees knew exactly what was required. Work to replace the roof then began as soon as the money had been raised, with the children sharing classrooms so their education was not interrupted. The children and

    The Chalfonts Independent Grammar School in High Wycombe has raised funds to buy English, maths, science and social studies textbooks for their link school, Holy Trinity Junior Secondary School in Makeni. The students and staff in Makeni are delighted with the new books, and The Chalfonts have sent out a poster to their school community showing what has been achieved.
