Great progress at St Mathias

Thanks to the generosity of EWA supporters, work to build a new block of four classrooms at St Mathias Primary School in Lunsar is making excellent progress. The roof is now completed, and the next stage is to work on the inside of the classrooms and build new toilets. A second building with three classrooms has already been refurbished. The Bishop of Freetown has also contributed to the project, and Education Officer Joshua Tucker keeps us up to date with progress. A further £3,500 is needed to compete the project, and this is the focus of EWA's fundraising for the coming months. EWA stalls at Pulborough and Arundel raise £250

EWA had three stalls at the school fair at St Mary's CE Primary School in Pulborough on Saturday 13th June. The stalls raised £150 for EWA, which will go directly to supporting children in Sierra Leone. Arundel Church of England Primary School (ACE) had a fair on the same day and raised £100 for EWA. Thank you to Trustees Alyson Heath and Hannah Turner for organising the stalls at Pulborough, and Trustee Sue Bingham for organising the stall at ACE.

St Andrew's raises £1,432 through Lent Giving

St Andrew's Church in Moulsecoomb, Brighton, raised an amazing £1,432 for EWA through their Lent Giving. Lent is traditionally a time when people give things up, and donate the money to charity. Members of the congregation at St Andrew's were invited to make donations to EWA to support the rebuilding of St Mathias School in Lunsar, and we would like to thank them for their exceptional generosity. This will make a tremendous difference to the education of children in Sierra Leone.

Easter raffle raises £314

St Mary's Church in Pulborough has raised a fantastic £314 for EWA by holding an Easter raffle, organised by committee member Susie Hindman and Chair of Trustees Alyson Heath. First prize was the Easter hamper shown in the photograph. Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket.

New link school on the Isle of Wight

Oakfield CE Primary School on the Isle of Wight has been linked with SLC Coronation Field in Bo. Trustee Amanda Healey visited Oakfield in March to lead an assembly about Sierra Leone, showing photos including some of Coronation Field, and the children responded enthusiastically. They asked lots of questions and enjoyed trying on clothes from Sierra Leone. Deputy Headteacher Mrs Doyle had already created a display board about the link, and Education Secretary Alex was delighted to see his photograph is included in the display. Oakfield now plans to develop the link through writing letters and fundraising. If your school would also like a link with a school in Sierra Leone, please contact EWA.

Work begins at St Mathias

Work has begun to replace a dilapidated building at St Mathias Primary School in Lunsar with a new block of classrooms. When Trustees visited this school in 2024 they were appalled by the terrible conditions for teaching and learning. Now the old building has been demolished, and the Bishop of Freetown has turned the earth to begin the construction of a new building. EWA still needs to raise more funds to complete this vital work.
